Apocalypse, doomsday, whatever you want to call it, there’s no denying that any day could be the day that signifies the end of the human race. By now, we’ve all heard so many theories about the world ending that it doesn’t seem to faze us anymore. After all, we partied like it was 1999 since no one was supposed to live to see the new millennium. And then we somehow made it through Christmas 2012 and then some despite the fact that the Mayan calendar concluded on December 21, 2012.
Although there have been several false predictions, we shouldn’t be so quick to put our mortality on a pedestal. (Dinosaurs did that and they’re no longer here.) The end of the world may be closer than we think. As we ponder about which way might be the best way to go, here are some plausible scenarios that could soon wipe out the humankind.
It got the dinosaurs and it could get us again. An asteroid wiping all existence of life is unsurprisingly likely considering it did the same thing a little over 65 million years ago. If the Earth were to get pummeled by a large enough asteroid, the impact has the potential to set off super tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions that’ll send all of the Earth’s living creatures to doom. Astronomers say that a huge asteroid could hit the Earth as early as 2032. But other scientists say there is a realistic chance (0.3%) an asteroid won’t hit the Earth until 2880. Between the two, we’re hoping for the latter since we won’t have to live through it.
